How to Learn Chinese and Other Odd Stories
Aug 16

Why do you want to learn Mandarin online? Is it because you’re traveling to China really soon? Do you need to master a few Chinese phrases to interact with locals? Or do you simply want to memorize a few Chinese words you can lob at soon-to-be business partners, just so they would see you’re not entirely a greenhorn when it comes to all things Chinese and mainland.

Whatever your motivation for wanting to learn Mandarin online, the act itself is easy to accomplish. There are many language courses online, among them Pocket Chinese, that will have you gabbing away in Mandarin in no time at all! On top of signing up for classes, however, there are also other ways to ensure you master the language quickly, efficiently, and through your own efforts. Here are some tips how.

1. Carry a Chinese-English dictionary wherever you go.
That way, you could memorize a few Mandarin words or phrases during times when you are idle. Then, while waiting in line or waiting for a bus, you could review the words and phrases you’ve learned.

2. Be friends with a Mandarin speaker.
Listen to the way this person pronounces words. Physical interaction with a native speaker will show you the nuances of the language better than if you set out to learn Mandarin online.

3. Read Mandarin.
If you can somehow take to the language like a duck to water and be able to read advanced Mandarin texts after three months or so, read all things Mandarin that you could get your hands on. Start from first grade materials and progress through sixth grade.

Mastering a new language is never easy but with diligence and patience, your decision to learn Mandarin online will eventually pay off. Given time, practice, and enough Internet sessions, you will be able to backpack your way through China if you have to and not have to get by on your English-speaking skills alone.
